About PLTW: Project Lead The Way provides a comprehensive approach to STEM Education. Through activity-, project-, and problem-based curriculum, PLTW gives students in kindergarten through high school a chance to apply what they know, identify problems, find unique solutions, and lead their own learning.
Fairmont's STEM program: Through local support and donations, Fairmont was able to implement a first class 7th and 8th grade STEM programs this year.
In 7th grade, students learn to become Medical Detectives by solving medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs. They investigate how to measure and interpret vital signs and how the systems of the human body work together to maintain health.
Our 8th grade students learn to build and create virtual images of their designs using professional grade computer modeling software in the Design and Modeling Unit. In the Automation and Robotics unit, students use VEX Robotics platform to design, build and automate solutions to real world problems.
With a generous Paramount Education Program (PEP) grant, Fairmont will be implementing PLTW's K-5 STEM program next school year. Students will be studying computer programming, energy, flight, properties of matter, light, animal adaptations, and robotics through hands-on, project-based activities designed to foster creativity and elevate interest in STEM fields.
What we still need: Fairmont continues to build its STEM program with after school STEM clubs, like MESA and Science Olympiad. In both programs, students build STEM based projects and compete against students from other regional schools in a wide variety of challenges. As our programs grow, we require additional LEGO robotics kits, joystick controllers, and materials to build bridges, gliders, and mouse trap cars.
